At the animal rescue centre a couple of years ago.
Mikoto’s friend, a volunteer at the animal rescue centre, sought his help to take some photos of the animals who were ready for adoption during the term break. And that was when Mikoto first met Kin who was a young cat then.
The centre has just managed to rescue the barely alive Kin from his owner after they received a tip off that the man has been abusing his cat. They were afraid that they might have to put Kin down as he suffered a hit on his head, some broken bones on his chest and fore limb. But Mikoto succeeded in convincing them to let him care for the kitten.
Since then, Mikoto visited Kin everyday and cared for him. Initially, Kin cowered in fear whenever Mikoto tried to approach him. But after some time, Kin started to accept his presence and finally even allowed Mikoto to hold him. Everyone in the centre was happy to see Kin’s steady recovery and trust in man again.
When Kin was finally out of danger, Mikoto took him home and the triplets adopted him and gave him the name “Kin [金]” because of his pale golden fur. And Kin is happy to find a home where he is loved and safe.
Mikado, woke up by Mikoto who has snuggled up beside him, asked “Bad dream?”
Mikoto: “En.” And they fell back into sleep.
Shortly, Mikado was awoken by a voice…
Sleepily, he opened his eyes and saw Mizuki standing by the bedside.
Mizuki: “Ni-chan, can I sleep with you?”
Mikado, smiled and reached out his hand towards Mizuki: “Come.”
Mizuki climbed into the bed, hugging Mikado, he fell back into sleep. Lying between the two sleeping brothers like they were used to when young, Mikado, feeling a bit squashed up, thought to himself: “Hmm…need to get a bigger bed…” and then felt into a slightly uncomfortable sleep.
The clock chimed 4. After stretching out his tired muscles, Mikoto reached out for his strawberry cupcake absentmindedly when Shun walked by and saw him…and the cupcake.
S: Mikoto-ni, give me a bite!
M: Ah! Oh! …….
Before Mikoto could response, Shun held onto his hand and bit on the cupcake.
S: It’s yummy! (Another bite…) Hmmm…(another bite)….
In no time, Shun finished the cupcake and smiling cheekily, he thanked Mikoto with a hug.
M:(thinking to self) Should have bought two cupcakes … (-_-;)
Mikado smiles when he finds Mizuki sleeping on the floor again. Since they were boys, Mizuki has the tendency to just lie down wherever he was and dozed off. Because he has a weak constitution, Mikado makes a point to seek him out and carry him back to his room so that he would not catch a cold.
And Mizuki enjoys being pampered by his eldest brother.
Monday morning. Tetsu was standing in front of his shoe locker when he felt a light tap on his shoulder. Turning around he looked into the smiling face of Mikado.
“Good morning! Tetsu!”
“Huh? Why are you calling me by my name?”
“Why not? You can call me Mikado too. Oh! We better run…” And before Tetsu could react, Mikado grabbed his wrist and started running towards the classroom dragging him along.
And so from that morning, Tetstu suddenly found himself the centre of Mikado’s attention. At every break between lessons, he found Mikado hanging around chatting about anything and everything. At every lunch break, he found Mikado having lunch with him. Every time they needed to form a team for school work or physical exercise, Tetsu would find himself in the same team as Mikado. When Tetsu was studying in the library, he would find Mikado sitting beside him studying too. Every morning Mikado would meet him at the shoe locker and walk to the classroom with him. Every day after school, Mikado would walk to the station with Tetsu. Every now and then, Mikado would throw an invitation to Tetsu to a movie or a karaoke or tea. Even though Tetsu would turn him down every time.
By chance, Mikado managed to get hold of Tetsu’s mobile number and mail. And so, Tetsu found himself receiving messages regularly from Mikado.
Initially, Tetsu was irritated by the constant presence of Mikado and his attention. He tried various tactics from hiding to ignoring to even being rude and nasty. But all these would only spur Mikado to step up his efforts to break down the wall between them.
Soon, they became known as best friends for they were always seen together. Slowly, Tetsu began to feel tired of trying to push Mikado away and telling people they were not best friends. He began to accept having Mikado around him.
“I suppose it won’t do me any harm. I can just see him as my pet dog.” Tetsu convinced himself.
And then, summer came.
Tetsu was reading his book while Mikado was napping beside him.
“Ahhh…it’s summer already.”
“Shall we go to the beach during the holiday?”
Mikado smiled and went back to his napping while Tetsu continued his reading in silence.
“Yo! Amaha! What a coincidence!” Mikado cheerfully greeted a surprised Tetsu.
“Igarashi” Tetsu mumbled.
“This is Kiriyama Kaoru. He’s first year in our school.”
“Nice to meet you, senpai.”
“Ah…nice to meet you.” Tetsu reluctantly replied.
“Do you have anything on? Do you want to join us for lunch and after that we’re …”
“No.” Tetsu firmly replied before Mikado could finished his offer.
Annoyance flashed across Mikado’s face. “I’ve heard from our classmates that you have been rejecting every invitation from them since you came. Why?”
Irritated, Tetsu said, “It’s none of your business” and turned to move away.
Mikado grabbed Tetsu’s arm and asked, “None of my business? Since we came in, you have been hurting people who want to befriend you by pushing them away. Why? Why are you so determined to be alone? Don’t you want to have friends?”
Tetsu glared at Mikado and firmly replied, “I have no need for friends. They will only give me troubles. Now, please let go.”
Surprised by the anger in Tetsu’s declaration, Mikado let him go.
Watching Tetsu merged into the crowd, Kaoru turned to Mikado and saw a determined smile on his face. “Mik-ni?”
“You have no need for friends? Well, my dearest Tetsu, I will show you how a good friend I am and how much troubles you will get from me.” He mumbled.
